The following year, from 1989 to 1990, he held the same role for the Honorable Eugene A. Wright, within the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
From 1990 to 2001, he was part of the United States Department of Justice as an assistant United States attorney.

Shanlon "Shan" Wu (Born May 13, 1959) is a Chinese-American criminal defense lawyer. He was the CNN Legal Analyst during the Manafort's Trial and a member of Rick Gates legal team.

Early life and education

Wu was born in Westchester County NY where he attended and graduated in Scarborough Day School in 1976.

Wu received his law degree from Georgetown University; prior to that, he obtained a BA in English Literature from Vassar College and an MFA in Creative Writing from Sarah Lawrence College.
Career
Legal

From 1991-2001, Wu served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the United States Department of Justice as well as Counsel to Attorney General Janet Reno, a role in which he advised on various criminal and civil law investigations, before becoming a founding member of Wu, Grohovsky & Whipple, a Washington, D.C.-based law firm in 2010.

Wu's primary area of practice is representing college students accused of violations like those involving drugs, plagiarism, and sexual assault. This involvement with college students led him to help create the DC Student Defense website and blog, which is featured on the American Bar Association website.

In 2018, Wu was part of the legal team that defended former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort in his much publicized trial. [14] Wu also represented Manafort's former protégé Rick Gates.

Wu is a part-time professor at George Washington University, and a former Federal Prosecutor.
Boxing

Prior to law school, Wu tried his hand as an amateur boxer. While studying at Vassar he studied and trained with two-time heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson.
