A 22-year-old man accused of accidentally shooting and killing his cousin during a night of partying in 2009 was sentenced to five years in prison Monday.

Bradley Devon Froman pleaded guilty to a manslaughter charge in exchange for the five-year prison term in the January 2009 shooting death of his 16-year-old cousin, Michael Lynn Hargrove Jr.

Officials said Froman and Hargrove were in a barn in Elm Mott where they liked to hang out. They were drinking and smoking marijuana when Froman pulled out a .357-caliber revolver.

He was playing with the gun and pointing it at Hargrove, who told him to stop, officials said.

Froman initially lied about the incident but later gave a statement indicating he was responsible for the shooting, officials said.

After Froman was sentenced, another of Hargrove’s cousins told Froman in a victim-impact statement that she knows he loved Hargrove and feels bad for what happened. But, she said, he needs to be held accountable for his reckless, deadly act.

Froman’s attorneys, Russ Hunt Sr. and Michelle Tuegel, echoed the words of the victim-impact statement.

“It’s like she said in court. The family knows that Bradley loved Mikey,” Hunt said. “This is a case where everybody loses. Mikey is dead and now Bradley is getting locked up because he did 
something reckless. It’s just an unfortunate situation.”

Froman was set to stand trial in the manslaughter case in June 2012. But the trial was canceled when 19th State Judge Ralph Stroman noticed the indictment against Froman was flawed because it failed to allege an offense.

Froman chose not to waive his 10-day notice because of the amended indictment, forcing the cancellation of his trial.

Froman must serve half of his sentence before he can be considered for 
parole.
